Peril in Paradise follows a group of humans who find new lives for themselves on an alien planet after fleeing from Earth. It’s a classic space opera with heroes and villains and lots of action and intrigue. Taking the premise that humans aren’t the only sentient beings in the universe, the plot has our species interacting and living with more advanced humanoids on their home planet Cepheus. But wherever humans go, they cause trouble – willingly or unwillingly. The protagonist of the novel, Daniel Radu, does a lot of soul-searching into his part in the troubles that now face the Cepheusians. He finds joy in his new career as a botanist, and together with his boss, an older and wiser Cepheusian woman, Daniel solves problems relying on his human knowledge. A dead giveaway for a man who has a false identity to keep him safe.

Peril in Paradise is a compelling read that relates to what we face today on Earth and in our lives. The world-building is stunning and detailed. The protagonist, Daniel, questions his place in the world and his future; he comes to accept that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. And at the same time, it’s a thrilling adventure. Five stars and a must-read for sci-fi fans!

  4. Richard J.

This book captivated me from the first page to the last page and it was one of those novels where I didn’t want the journey to end. Peril in Paradise delivered a thrilling and thought-provoking adventure that left me clamouring for more. From the lush landscapes of Cepheus-9 to the pulse-pounding adventures on alien exoplanets, the plot is equal parts exhilarating and introspective. The characters leap off the page with depth and nuance, grappling not only with external threats but also with their own inner turmoil. Although you can read this one as a standalone, it is the fourth in a series, and that’s why I recommend reading the other books first.

Peril in Paradise is more than just a thrilling space opera—it’s an exploration of identity, morality, and the resilience of the human spirit. With each twist and turn, Zanne masterfully unravels the mystery, leaving readers breathless and eager for more. I look forward to reading more of Zanne’s work!
