This novel will suit every age except for the very young. I found it as absorbing as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In fact, when my children were tweens, they struggled with Hagrid’s accented English. No such difficulty here. Most highly recommended!

As Tiaris encounters the unsettling prejudices and injustices of the 1900s, she gives young adult readers a rare and needed gift. I recommend this book for readers drawn to time-travel plots and historical events. Intertwined with mystery and the intrigue of a family legend, the story moves along quickly, comparing a forgotten past with its contemporary future. Written in first-person narrative ensures readers will identify with the emotions and perspectives of the main character, Tiairis. The author also creates a bilingual opportunity for readers, as she carefully integrates Spanish vocabulary and terms with their corresponding English translation, giving authenticity to the plot and characters. This story was well-researched, an enjoyable read, with a gratifying ending. A charming story following 14-year-old Tiaris, who while paddling in the mangroves of Panama during a sudden lightning storm, gets flung back in time to 1906 when the canal was first being dug. There, Tiaris meets handsome Gianni, who helps her find a place to stay with Carmen and the trio become fast friends. Over two months in 1906, Tiaris is forced to survive on her wits. At 14, my knowledge of nature, Spanish, history,and politics would have fit on a pinhead compared to Tiaris but she aptly uses her knowledge to solve a legend, overcome obstacles, grow up fast, and get herself home. I enjoyed how the author shared abundant knowledge and love of the forest and its creatures through the characters. Ialso loved the foreman being referred to as ‘the parasite’. What a perfect character name. Perhaps in book two, readers will learn more about the magic coins in the Panama Chronicles.
